Photo of the Week (19 September 2016)
Last week we had some vibrant colors and this week we have some black and white photography for the Photo of the Week. This week’s photograph is from last year’s Wonderfruit Festival. The annual music and art festival is held just outside of Pattaya, Thailand.
The Taste of Wonder area is like a little tent market. The vendors in the area sell some rather fun clothing and other “costume” items for those who want the full festival feeling. The photo at the top of the page is a night shot with the sign fully lit.
Personally, I like how the black and white in the photo emphasizes the festival atmosphere. The small lights stand out against the blackness of the background and the “Taste of Wonder” sign jumps straight out at me when I view the image.
The image you’re seeing here was shot on a Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone.
Black and White Photography
I often switch between color and black and white photography and I’m okay with that. I’m a man who enjoys vivid color photography and the magic of black and white.
The color version of the Taste of Wonder photo, for me, just lacks the oomph of the black and white. The other colors in the area around the scene detract from the loudness of the lights. But, in black and white it’s right there, “Taste of Wonder” in your face.
More This Year?
I’m hoping to return to the festival this year and make better use of the abundant photographic opportunities. Last year was my first year attending so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect or what I might need when camping and taking some photos at a festival.
This December, I will know what I need to take and how to make the best of the experience while having fun and catching some better shots with a better camera.
